Twice a year, eleven non-profit business organizations in New Jersey join to promote their expertise – the marketing and communications roles that transcend industries. These groups are comprised of local volunteer-based organizations such as NJAdClub, ADCNJ, and JSPRAA as well as local chapters of national and international groups including NJAMA, BMA-NJ, MENG-NJ, IABC/NJ, AWCNJ, PRSA-NJ, MCA-INJ, and SCIP-NJ.
Over 400 guests are expected at Mayfair Farms on December 15, 2010 from 6-9pm, representing over 200 different companies across industries such as accounting, finance, engineering, construction, advertising, printing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, business services, retail, consumer packaged goods, hospitality, technology, transportation, education, medical, sports, and more. Adding to the diversity are the wide variety ‘day jobs’: strategic marketing, product marketing, marketing research, internal communications, public relations, branding, competitive intelligence, consumer focus groups, copywriting, illustration, graphic design, web design, programming, email marketing, SEO, SEM, outdoor advertising, TV, media, magazine editorial, blogging, social media marketing, video, and photography (to name a few).
But, attendees have common goals: responsibility for marketing communications or the tools and process that allow the communication to take place. In some cases, product or service offerings are appropriate for use by event attendees and thus sponsors help with the event.
The NJ MarCom networking event has a buffet dinner for the price of admission, and the opportunity to meet fellow guests and representatives of the participating organizations to learn how these groups can be of benefit. Profits from NJ MarCom Holiday Networking Event are distributed back to the non-profit organizations so that quality local events can be provided throughout the year.

Said NJ MarCom volunteer chairperson, Wendy Flanagan, President Brand4Market, “With the job market being what it is today, everyone should be actively investing in a professional network as a way of creating opportunity. The NJ MarCom Holiday Event helps people develop skills beyond the immediate comfort zone. For example, many people understand a 30-second elevator pitch for a company. Few can actually define themselves, strengths, and leadership in the same manner. They are just too modest, or haven’t given consideration to their own differentiation.”
Flanagan started volunteering to coordinate the NJ MarCom events in 2005 when she saw patterns of behavior from the individual organizations in New Jersey. Said Flanagan, “The organizations suffered from a similar membership churn with the highest attrition at year one. This was a two-fold problem: 1) not enough individual involvement through volunteer activities to build member commitment, and 2) an individual joining as a member of an organization where the focus is not in alignment with his/her interests.”
“This event is so big that each organization has the opportunity to task 6-10 volunteers from their group. They (the organizations) manage a spreadsheet of activities and gain commitment from individuals to act as greeters, hand out name badges, etc. Volunteering gives organization members authority, confidence, and ownership of their organization.”
“With collaborative events in July and December, non-member guests are able to interview the different organizations and better decide which provide the right solutions for their specific talents, interests, and needs. It gives the organizations a chance to focus their presentation on how their group is unique and why it’s important to the individual.”
